Grad Funding/Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MAS GRADUATE STUDIES (TUITION AND RESEARCH)

The Department of Mexican American Studies encourages all MAS majors to create an account thru Scholarship Universe in order to access the applications to our departmental scholarships.  Once you have created a profile with Scholarship Universe and if you are a major in our progam you will have access to apply to some, or all, of our departmental scholarships.  Please find here below a list of scholarships we offer and the requirements:

CONSUELO I AGUILAR SCHOLARSHIP ($1,700 Award - Tuition Only)
The Consuelo Aguilar Scholarship was established by the family of Consuelo for students interested in majoring in MAS:

Major interest:
Incoming high school or college transfer students
Must be an incoming MAS major, MAS MS Candidate or MAS PhD Candidate

Academics:
GPA must be over 3.0

Document required:
►Essay: stating why you chose Mexican American studies as a major. Explain why you need the scholarship, how the funding will be used, and why you should be awarded the scholarship.
►A letter of recommendation written by a community organization, a community leader or a supervisor to community work/involvement stating the student's investment and involvement in the community of underrepresented minorities.

RICHARD RUIZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($400 Award - Tuition Only)
The Richard Ruiz Memorial Scholarship was established by the College of Education, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, family and friends to honor the passion and dedication of Professor Richard Ruiz. This scholarship will support:

Major interest:
Full-Time undergraduate or graduate students studying in Mexican American culture and social justice. Preference given to first generation students.

Requirements:
FAFSA on File
This scholarship can only be used for tuition.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MAS GRADUATE STUDIES (RESEARCH ONLY)

Through generous donations made to the deparment, two funds have been set up where students can apply for financial assistance for research/dissertation purpose. We understand that equipment, software, participant incentives can be costly. We encourage graduate students whom are starting their dissertation research as well as students in the middle of it to apply for the two financial opportunities below. 

FUNDACIÓN MEXICO GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH (up to $2,000 Award - Research Only)

The Fundación México Graduate Student Research Endowment was established to support graduate students pursing research in Mexican or the United States/Mexico border region:

Major interest:
Student (s) working toward a master's or doctoral degree in MAS may apply for research activities/research related travel funding.

Document required:
►Submit a one page budget and budget justification, how the funds will be used to further their research.
►Submit a writing sample from their research, thesis, or dissertation.
►Submit a letter of reference addressed to the Fundación México Graduate Student Research Endowment. Graduate letters are typically from the MS or PhD faculty advisor.
►Write a letter of thanks addressed to the President of Fundación México.
►A letter of recommendation written by a community organization, a community leader or a supervisor to community work/involvement stating the student's investment and involvement in the community of underrepresented minorities.

BANK OF THE WEST
Graduate student funds are available to UA graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Mexican American Studies (the Master’s degree, the Dual M.S.-M.P.H. Program, and the Doctoral degree). The money itself can be used for Research Expenses (Travel expenses, participant incentives, software for stats or for materials needed for research). 

Awards Available:
Master's Level: up to $500
Doctoral Level: up to $1,000

MEXICAN AMERICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION (MASA)
Graduate student funds are available to UA graduate students pursuing a degree in the Department of Mexican American Studies (the Master’s degree, the Dual M.S.-M.P.H. Program, and the Doctoral degree). The money itself can be used for University Workshops, Research Expenses (Travel expenses or for materials needed for research as well as membership dues to scholastic journals or associations), travel reimbursements to attend or participate in conferences (preference will be given to those presenting at conferences over those attending).

Awards Available:
Master's Level: up to $500
Doctoral Level: up to $1,000
Group Application: To be determined by budget
