Scholarships for Mexican American Studies Majors

The Department of Mexican American Studies encourages all MAS majors to create an account thru Scholarship Universe in order to access the applications to our departmental scholarships.  Once you have created a profile with Scholarship Universe and if you are a major in our progam you will have access to apply to some, or all, of our departmental scholarships.  Please find here below a list of scholarships we offer and the requirements:

Consuelo I Aguilar Scholarship Fund ($1,700 Award) *Award can be used for tuition only

  • Incoming High School Senior or College Transfer
  • Must be MAS major, MAS MS candidate or MAS PhD Candidate
  • GPA must be over 3.0 to qualify
  • Previous recipients not eligible
  • Documents required as attachments:
    • Essay stating why student chose Mexican American Studies as a Major, explain need for this scholarship, how the funding will be used, and why they are a deserving student.   
    • A letter of recommendation written by a community organization, a community leader or a supervisor to community work/involvement stating student’s investment and involvement in the community of underrepresented minorities.               

Renee Jacome Majors Mexican American Studies Scholarship (2 Tution Scholarships of $2000 each) *Award can be used for tuition only

  • MAS Undergraduate student
  • GPA must be over 2.5 to qualify
  • Previous recipients not eligible
  • Documents required as attachments:
    • Essay stating why student chose Mexican American Studies as a Major, explain need for this scholarship, how the funding will be used, and why student is a deserving student.  Response should not exceed two double-spaced typewritten pages. 
    • A letter of recommendation written by an instructor with whom the student  has taken a class.                

 Richard Ruiz Memorial Scholarship  (1 award of $400) *Award can be used for tuition only

  • Full time undergraduate or graduate student studying in Mexican American culture and social justice in Mexican American Studies
  • Preference given to first generation students.
  • FASFA must be on file            
  • The Richard Ruiz Memorial Scholarship was established by the College of Education, The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, family and friends to honor the passion and dedication of Professor Richard Ruiz. This scholarship will support a full time undergraduate or graduate student studying Mexican American culture and social justice.
