M.S. MAS

The Master of Science in MAS is designed to be an applied degree; thirty-three units of credit are required for completion.

The Mexican American Studies M.S. curriculum is a dynamic course of study that has been developed to advance the understanding of the large Mexican American and Latino populations in the United States. Three strands of coursework are available: Latina/o Health and Wellness; Historical and Cultural Studies; and Critical Education & Migration Studies. 

How to Apply

To apply, you must complete the Graduate College online application. Follow these steps:

  1. Create a GradApp account
  2. Complete your GradApp profile under "My Account".
  3. Select "Apply to a Program" from the sidebar.
  4. Choose "Degree Seeking" under application type and "Mexican American Studies (MS)" under program of study.
  5. Choose the semester during which you wish to enter the program.
  6. Your application should now be initiated under "My Active Applications."

Latina/o Health and Wellness

The Latina/o Health and Wellness strand prepares students to conduct culturally competent health research, and to develop health programs targeting Latinos.

Historical and Cultural Studies

The Historical and Cultural Studies strand offers a concentration dealing with contemporary scholarship, theory, and methodology in anthropology, history, and popular culture.

Critical Education and Migration Studies

The Critical Education and Migration Studies strand provides students with the qualitative and quantitative background necessary to both understand and implement policies aimed at Mexican Americans and the communities they live in.

Required Application Material

  • Statement of Purpose
  • Statement of Intent
  • Upload a single-spaced, two- to three-page statement of intent including professional plans, statement of interest in the M.S. program, and background in Mexican American Studies.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
    • Preferably from former professors or professionals directly acquainted with your work and scholarship. Letters of recommendation from outside the academics may be given less weight in the final analysis). These letters should be current (no more than six months old). They must be on official letterhead.
  • Writing Sample: Upload a 10 - 20 page scholarly paper that demonstrates your mastery of the subject and a clear, cogent writing style. 
  • Transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended or are currently attending. Unofficial transcripts must be uploaded with your application. You must submit official transcripts, later on, before you can be officially admitted by the Graduate College
